Evening fire destroys camper trailer in Habersham County

By Christian Ashliman Anchor/Reporter

A fire Monday evening destroyed a fifth-wheel camper trailer and its contents on Suttles Road off Antioch Church Road in Habersham County.

Habersham County Emergency Services responded along with units from the county sheriff’s office, Clarkesville Fire Department and Clarkesville police at 5:18 p.m. Once on the scene, responders found a camper trailer fully on fire.

“We responded to an approximately a 1,500-square-foot, triple-axle camper,” Habersham County Emergency Services Battalion Chief Michael Alexander said. “When we arrived, it was fully involved. We quickly got the fire under control and secured the propane tanks. All the family members were out safe.”

The owner of the camper was preparing for a trip with his family when the fire broke out. He was able to evacuate the trailer, unhook it from the truck and move the truck approximately 60 feet away from the blaze, according to Habersham County spokesman Rob Moore.

The camper was not used as a primary residence and the cause of the fire appears to be accidental in nature, according to Alexander.

No injuries were reported and command at the scene was wrapped up at 7 p.m.

The official cause of the fire is still under investigation.
