Longtime Gainesville City School System Board of Education member Sammy Smith announced at Tuesday's school board meeting he will retire at the end of 2023.

Smith, who is in his fourth term and has spent 16 years on the school board, said he will officially retire from the position in December.

"I'll finish up out my term robustly, as I have served, and there's lots of time for cheers and jeers," Smith said at the meeting.

School board chairman Andy Stewart expressed his gratitude following Smith's announcement.

"Thank you for everything you've done," Stewart said. "You're obviously the historian of our group and we may have to make you an ex-officio member of the board starting in 2024."

Smith ran unopposed for his most recent term in November 2019. He serves as the Board Treasurer and represents District 5.
