A Hart County man has been indicted by a grand jury on allegations of elder exploitation.

In a release Wednesday, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr's office said Lawrence Montgomery, Jr. is accused of taking more than $8,600 in Social Security payments from his elderly mother for whom he was the personal representative. His mother, who has not been named, reportedly lived in a nursing facility.

The release alleges that Montgomery used the money for personal expenditures.

The Attorney General's Medicaid Fraud Division presented evidence to a Hart County Grand Jury, which then filed the indictment on June 1.

“This indictment is yet another step in our ongoing efforts to protect our most vulnerable Georgians,” Carr said in Wednesday's release. “With our Medicaid Fraud Division, we are working each day to ensure those who take advantage of older adults are held accountable for their actions. Elder exploitation of any kind will not be tolerated in our state.”

Montgomery faces one felony county of Exploitation of an Elder Person.
