HOSCHTON, Ga. — Jackson County helped its standing in Region 8-6A with a 5-1 win over Habersham Central at home on Friday.
The Panthers are tied with Apalachee for the second spot in the region and have two games remaining, one with Apalachee next week and the other against region champ North Forsyth.
On Friday, Jackson County went to work quickly against the Raiders, scoring three runs in the first and one in the second to take a 4-0 lead. They held Habersham Central to just one run in the third inning while adding insurance in the fourth.
Sam Rountree drove in two of the five runs, while Drew Mathews and Nick Austin drove in one each.
Spencer Muffuletto was 2-for-4 at the plate to lead the Panthers.
Mason Dawe drove in the Raiders' lone run and was 1-for-4 on the day. Maverick Chitwood was 2-for-3.

Flowery Branch is just 1/2 game out of the No. 3 spot in the Region 8-5A standings with the win over Heritage at home on Friday.
The Jefferson-Loganville game was postponed due to weather on Friday. If the Falcons sweep Heritage on Monday and Jefferson loses two to region leader Loganville, the Falcons will seal up the No. 3 seed in the playoffs.
On Friday, Kade Smallwood's double in the fifth inning broke a 1-1 tie and helped the Falcons (16-10, 6-4 Region 8-5A) to the lead for good. Flowery Branch added one run in the sixth and held on for the win.
Aaron Attaway picked up the win for the Falcons, allowing one run on five hits while striking out 10 in seven innings.
Riley Mitchell, Smallwood, Kyle Adamac, Jackson Freeman and Mason Compton had one hit each.
