I-85 Southbound opened at Highway 82 overpass after dump truck hits bridge

By AccessWDUN Staff

UPDATE 3:36 p.m.

The Highway 82 overpass and all Interstate 85 southbound lanes in Jackson County are deemed safe for travel after a dump truck hit a bridge beam.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said Troopers were dispatched to a single-vehicle crash, on I-85 South, near mile marker 143.

Upon further investigation, it was determined that the dump truck had pulled out of the construction zone and began traveling south along the interstate.  The driver forgot to lower his dump bed and struck the Spur bridge, causing it to separate from the vehicle.

The truck stopped at the shoulder of the roadway and the dump bed came to a stop in the right travel lane.  Both southbound lanes of I-85 and both lanes of the Highway 82 bridge were shut down until the bridge had been inspected and cleared by GDOT.

The driver of the dump truck received minor injuries and was transported to Northeast Georgia Medical Center in Gainesville.

ORIGINAL 1:58 p.m.

Jackson County drivers should use alternate routes Thursday afternoon after a dump truck hit a bridge beam at the Highway 82 overpass on Interstate 85's southbound lanes. All southbound lanes on I-85 just before mile marker 142 were closed as of 2 p.m. Thursday.

The Highway 82 overpass was also closed to thru traffic following the wreck.

The Georgia Department of Transportation said a bridge inspector was on their way to determine the integrity of the overpass.

Motorists should expect delays and are asked to find alternate routes in the interim.
