Jackson County Sheriff’s Office warns residents about scammers

By Sydney Hencil Anchor/Reporter
The Jackson County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about scammers posing as police officers after a resident was scammed into sending $20,000 cash via UPS to a drop location in Butts County.

According to a social media post by the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, the victim quickly determined that they had been scammed and reported it on March 2, to the Sheriff’s Office and UPS.

The victim had been made to believe that they needed to send the money to avoid the government from taking charges against him.  The offenders did this by posing as a local police chief.

Jackson County investigators worked with UPS investigators to recover the cash before it was picked up by the unknown offender.  UPS was able to take the money back to a UPS hub in Griffin, GA.  Jackson County investigators responded to the Griffin UPS hub, recovered the cash and returned it to the victim.

The Jackson County Sheriff's office reminds residents that if you are asked to send cash, money orders, prepaid debit cards, or any personal information and you don’t feel comfortable, please contact the authorities to verify the transaction is legit.  Neither the Federal, State, or Local government will ever call and ask that you send money to avoid criminal charges.

Citizens are encouraged to notify their local law enforcement agencies of any suspicious persons, crimes or other relevant information by calling 911, Capt. Dale A. Dillow at (706) 387-6043, or the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office at (706) 367-8718.  Also please remember that you can provide information without being involved or identified by contacting the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office’s Anonymous Tip Line at (706) 367-3784 to report any Criminal or Suspicious Activity.
