By Austin Eller News Director

Dr. Mary Kay Murphy, who has served on the Gwinnett County Board of Education since January 1997, will not seek reelection during the 2024 election cycle.

According to a report from the Atlanta Journal-Constitution, Murphy recently made the announcement in a press release.

Murphy represents District III on the board, which is primarily comprised of schools along the west portion of Gwinnett County, ranging from the Peachtree Corners to the Sugar Hill areas. Murphy will have served 28 years on the board when she finishes her current term in December 2024.

Voters in District 3 will vote for Murphy's successor in an election on May 21. If no candidate reaches a 50% majority, a runoff will be held for the top two vote-getters.

The AJC reported Murphy served five terms as chair of the board, and 15 years on the Georgia School Board Association board. She also previously served on educational advisory committees for the governor and for the 7th Congressional District.

The Gwinnett County Public Schools website said Murphy received a 2013 Gwinnett Chamber of Commerce Public Service Award for her contributions to the education field.

In total, Murphy represents all or part of the Collins Hill, Duluth, Lanier, Norcross, North Gwinnett, and Peachtree Ridge clusters, as well as GIVE Center West, New Life Academy of Excellence in Duluth, North Metro Academy of Performing Arts, Phoenix High School at Sugarloaf Mills, and the Buice Center which includes the ADAPT, STRIVE, and BRIDGE programs.
