Habersham County landfill to stop accepting construction and demolition debris

By Austin Eller News Director

The Habersham County Landfill will stop accepting construction and demolition materials at the end of February with a goal of extending the landfill's life span.

Habersham County Solid Waste Director Johnnie Vickers told the Habersham County Commission this week that the landfill's construction and demolition cell was nearing capacity. A study has reportedly shown that putting waste in the municipal solid waste cell could cut the life of the landfill by a dozen years.

The last day C&D materials will be accepted at the landfill is Feb. 29, 2024. The county said the decision should extend the life of the landfill by 17 years.

Vickers told commissioners there are facilities in Habersham, Hall and Franklin counties that accept construction and demolition debris, the closest being a few miles from the landfill near Mount Airy.

“While we understand that this change may pose some challenges for some, we are confident that it will contribute to a healthier and more sustainable future for Habersham County,” Vickers said.
