Boys basketball: GHS still looking for 1st win; Buford rolls in Showcase

GROVETOWN, Ga. — The Gainesville boys are still looking for their first win of the season after dropping a 65-53 loss to Richmond Senior (NC) in the Iverson Classic on Saturday.

Senior Amari Chatman led the Red Elephants (0-9) with 21 points. Sophomore Brandon Nelson added 11 points and senior Ellis Pitts chipped in with 10 for Gainesville. Freshman Luke Nordholz scored 7 points with Jay Walls adding 4.

Gainesville is off until taking on East Hall in the opening round of the Lanierland tournament on Dec. 27 at West Hall High School.

The Class 7A eighth-ranked Wolves led from nearly start-to-finish to get a win in the North Georgia Showcase at The Buford Arena on Saturday.

Buford (7-1) jumped out to a 19-10 lead after the first quarter and then maintained its lead the rest of the way. The Wolves led 37-26 t the break before the Panthers (4-3) trimmed the lead to 54-47 going into the fourth quarter. But Buford outscored Starr's Mill 19-7 in the final period to pull away for good.

Chase Robinson paced Buford with 19 points. Kyle Carpenter added 11 points for the Wolves.

Scott Stevens led Starr's Mill 17 points. William Robinson had 14 points  for the Panthers.

Buford next will play host to Southwest DeKalb on Wednesday.
