Gas prices on the rise in first week of 2023

By Caleb Hutchins Assistant News Director

Gas prices have increased slightly in the first week of the new year.

According to the latest report from AAA, the average price for a gallon of regular in Georgia was $2.81 on Wednesday morning. That's up 10 cents from the previous week.

That price is still 15 cents lower than a month ago and 29 cents lower than this time in 2021.

"Georgia pump prices increased across the state, primarily due to the winter storm that just passed which caused refineries in the south to close," AAA Spokeswoman Montrae Waiters said. "Georgia gas prices will also rise once the state ends its gas tax suspension on January 10th. How high pump prices will go after the increase is yet to be determined.”

Northeast Georgia is seeing prices that are, on average, lower than the rest of the state. The average price for a gallon of regular in the Gainesville metro area was $2.71 Wednesday morning, 10 cents lower than the state average.

Stephens County has the lowest average of any county in Georgia at $2.67. More gas price data can be found on AAA's website.
