City of Winder improves 25 local streets with $1 million of resurfacing

The City of Wider has announced it invested $1 million in resurfacing projects around the city.

The city was able to improve 25 streets, which equated to nearly eight miles of roadway.

Clint Cannon, the City of Winder’s project manager, said that these resurfacing projects were planned and completed in stages to ease inconvenience to motorists and save taxpayer money.

“We were able to separate the work by two months and we completed 24 of the streets in seven days,”Cannon said.

“We understand how important it is to take care of the roads in our city’s neighborhoods, and these types of projects where we can collaborate with the State for funding are extremely beneficial,” Mayor David Maynard said.

According to Cannon, these resurfacing projects will extend the life of the roadways for the next decade. Cannon also said that once the contractors complete the repairs of the identified areas the streets will look brand new for Winder’s citizens.

A total of 6.74 miles were resurfaced using a process called micro surfacing, for a cost of $786,000, while .94 miles of Baskins Circle underwent a mill and asphalt overlay project, for a cost of $208,000.

Maynard explained that micro surfacing  is more cost effective in comparison to the traditional mill and overlay as it can resurface twice the length of road for the same price.

“The trick to using the micro surfacing is applying the treatment before the pavement has deteriorated too far. It may appear we are not addressing some roads in greater need of repair; however this is necessary to receive a greater value in the long run” Maynard said.

A total of 7.68 miles of Winder’s roadways were resurfaced representing $788,555.25 total investment in the City’s infrastructure. The Georgia Department of Transportation’s Local Maintenance and Improvement Grant represents $209,500 of the project.
