Gwinnett County Police have identified the woman who allegedly opened fire on a county school bus Monday morning while several elementary students were on board.

Celeste Michele Saunders was taken into custody without incident shortly after officers arrived on scene, and faces the following charges:

  • Cruelty to Children in the 1st Degree (4 counts)
  • Aggravated Assault (5 counts)
  • Possession of a Firearm During the Commission of Certain Felonies
  • Unauthorized Discharge of a Firearm Near Public Street

Gwinnett County Police say the shooting happened around 7:15 a.m. near Highland Gate Circle and Highland Gate Drive in Suwanee. Saunders, who apparently lives in the neighborhood where the shooting occurred, fired multiple shots at the bus.

None of the children on board the bus were injured. The school bus driver, 56-year-old Sugar Hill resident Patricia Rodriguez, sustained minor injuries from fragmented glass and was transported to a local hospital for treatment

It is unclear what caused the shooting. No other suspects are believed to be involved.

The investigation is ongoing.
