Football: Changes to the Week 8 radio lineup

By Bo Wilson Sports Editor

What can you say about Week 7? Hurricane Ian's threat to Northeast Georgia early last week forced 17 area games to Thursday. Then, Ian never showed up in Northeast Georgia.

Regardless, Week 7 went off without any weather issues.

What we did find out last week, regions continue to take shape.

Gainesville's win over Lanier has them atop the Region 8-6A standings with North Forsyth. Jefferson is at the top of Region 8-5A after beating Winder-Barrow. North Oconee is ahead of the pack in Region 8-4A. Dawson County and Gilmer lead Region 7-3A. East Jackson leads Region 8-2A.

Region play continues this week across the area with several key games, and due to the lack of press box space at East Forsyth, we'll only have two matchups on the Jacobs Media airwaves.

Flowery Branch at Winder-Barrow -- It's been a long time since Flowery Branch has been at the bottom of the region standings. This week, the Falcons will either stay there are move ahead of Winder-Barrow. Yes, it's the battle of the Region 8-5A basement dwellers in Winder on Friday. On paper, the Bulldoggs are the better team, averaging six more points on offense and giving up 10 fewer points on defense. But will that translate in this one? Possibly. The Falcons have struggled on offense this season, averaging 16.7 ppg, and have given up almost 27 ppg. If the Falcons are going to win this week, they'll have to find some offense. If not, Winder-Barrow will be dancing in downtown Winder.  You can listen to the game on WDUN AM 550 (Click to listen live)

Madison County at North Hall -- Oh boy, another crucial region contest. If North Hall can beat Madison County, they'll put themselves in an excellent position to potentially grab a playoff spot. However, there's one common opponent that screams, uh, oh. Last week, the Trojans were embarrassed by No. 2 North Oconee, 70-7. The week before, Madison County held the Titans to 42 points in a 42-0 loss. It's a lot of points, no matter what, but the Red Raiders made the blow a little less embarrassing. How much will that game play into Friday night's showdown between the two at The Brickyard? Who knows, but we do know that the Trojans are giving up 30.8 ppg and only scoring 22.8. The Red Raiders are giving up 24.8 and scoring 25.4. If the Trojans can slow Madison County down and get the offense rolling, it'll be a good night at The Brickyard.  You can hear the game on FM 102.9 WDUN (Click to listen live)
