Gwinnett County commissioners approve draft redistricting map

By AccessWDUN Staff

Gwinnett County commissioners approved a draft redistricting map Tuesday after a series of open houses. The draft map will be presented to the Georgia General Assembly.

State leaders are required to redraw district lines every 10 years so that elected officials represent around the same number of people. Gwinnett County's population grew by 150,000 residents from 2010 to 2020, according to a release from the county.

“The Board of Commissioners took deliberate steps to obtain public input by hosting open house events in each commission district,” said Gwinnett County Chairwoman Nicole Hendrickson in a prepared statement. “It was important to get feedback from our constituents to better understand what they value as redistricting priorities.”

Residents asked to keep geographic areas together, while creating districts that accurately represent the county's diverse population, according to the release.

The Georgia General Assembly reconvenes on Jan. 10 and will discuss the proposed map during the new session. Legislators will ultimately make the final decision on how to redraw Gwinnett County's districts. Once redrawn, the lines will be in place by the next election cycle.

The proposed map can be viewed in the above photo, or here.
