ATHENS — The University of Georgia Lady Bulldog basketball team will a No. 3 seed in the Alamo Region and will play No. 14 seed Drexel on Monday, March 22, at 12 p.m. in San Antonio.

"Obviously, it is exciting to be playing when you look at last year and us having to stop in the middle of playing before post-season began," Head Coach Joni Taylor said. "So, we are just grateful for the opportunity number one to get this far and compete in the NCAA Tournament. We are excited about representing The University of Georgia as a number three seed. We will get to work immediately on Drexel, and learn all that we can about them, and start scouting."

The game will be played at St. Mary’s University in San Antonio and will be televised on ESPN2.

Next Monday’s game will be the first-ever meeting between the two programs. The winner of the Georgia versus Drexel matchup will meet either No. 6 seed Oregon or No. 11 seed South Dakota on Wednesday, March 24, in the second round.

"Listen, there are so many bracketologies and so many predictions and so many things, we don't spend a lot of time doing a lot of things on the front end of it," Taylor said. "When we have done that in the past it never ends up being who you thought it was going to be. Especially given this year, again hopefully having an extended stay in San Antonio, our focus has been on spending time with our families, making sure we are all packed up for a long stay. Then we will get back in the office tonight and dig up everything we can on Drexel and start watching film. We don't do any prep in terms of maybe it's this team or maybe it's that team you know. We handle it when we find out who it is."

It marks the first time since 2007 the Lady Bulldogs have earned a No. 3 seed or higher. Georgia is making its 34th NCAA tournament appearance — a total that ties with Stanford for second-most among all NCAA Division I women’s basketball programs.

Georgia’s long and storied history in the tournament includes 20 Sweet 16 appearances, 11 Elite Eights and five Final Fours. The Lady Bulldogs have played in 88 NCAA tournament games, which ranks sixth among all DI teams.

Led by 2021 SEC Coach of the Year Joni Taylor, this year’s Georgia team boasts a 20-6 overall record. The Lady Bulldogs recently advanced to the finals of the SEC tournament following wins against No. 17 Kentucky and No. 2 Texas A&M.
