Georgia Urology's Sharpe recognized as Master in robotic surgery

By AccessWDUN staff

Georgia Urology’s Dr. Brent A. Sharpe recently became Georgia’s first robotic surgeon to receive accreditation as a Master Surgeon in Robotic Surgery by the Surgical Review Corporation. SRC recognizes doctors for providing the highest quality of care and patient safety.

Status as an accredited Master Surgeon in Robotic Surgery means that Sharpe has met nationally recognized standards. Not all surgeons seek accreditation; not all that undergo the rigorous requirements and inspection process are granted accreditation, according to SRC officials.

Receiving the accreditation as a Master Surgeon means Sharpe has also met standards for total surgical case volume and maintains a high frequency of performing robotic surgeries. Sharpe has completed more than 1,000 robotic procedures since finishing his urology residency at Emory University.

“It is truly an amazing honor to be recognized in this way,” said Sharpe in a prepared statement. “I have received accreditation in part because of all the robotic surgery staff who have helped me since starting a robotic program 15 years ago."

Healthcare facilities and surgeons seeking an SRC accreditation undergo an extensive assessment and inspection process to ensure the applicant meets SRC’s proven standards and requirements. These requirements include surgical volumes, facility equipment, clinical pathways and standardized operating procedures, an emphasis on patient education and continuous quality assessment. The inspection involves all staff working with the surgeon in the accredited program.

"We’re proud to recognize Dr. Sharpe for his commitment to advancing and providing quality care for all patients,” said Gary M. Pratt, CEO of SRC. “This accreditation signals that this surgeon is among the best in this specialty and is dedicated to delivering the highest level of care possible.”
