Clermont man dies in Thursday night traffic accident

By AccessWDUN Staff

A Clermont man died Thursday night in a single-vehicle traffic accident in Lumpkin County.

Sgt. Joshua Hedden with Georgia State Patrol Post 37 in Cumming said the fatal crash was reported at 7:45 p.m. just north of the Turner's Corner area on SR 11 near SR 9.

Hedden said George Loyd Payne, 75, was traveling south on SR 11 negotiating a curve to the left when his SUV traveled onto the west shoulder of the road. Payne lost control of the vehicle, rotated counter-clockwise, crossed the center line, traveled off the east shoulder of the road and then into an embankment. At that point, the vehicle overturned.

No other vehicles were involved.

Because of incorrect information provided by a source, an earlier version of this story incorrectly stated the name and gender of the victim.
