Newton County reverses suspension, allows sports to resume Tuesday

By AccessWDUN Staff

COVINGTON — In a statement Monday, Newton County Schools reversed its suspension on extracurricular activities, including sports.

The reversal now means that its three high schools -- Alcovy, Eastside, and Newton County -- can resume practices Tuesday, which means that all three football teams can now prepare for season openers on Sept. 4, though just how ready the three programs will be may be another issue.

According to Newton County School System Superintendent Samantha Fuhrey, the decision came after monitoring of data from the Georgia Department of Public Health.

“I know how important athletics is to the overall social-emotional well-being of our athletes, and we did not take the decision to shut down and now resume sports lightly," Fuhrey said. "We have continually monitored this situation and the data show a current downward trend in the numbers of COVID-19 in our community. That combined with our enhanced safety protocols led us to the decision to resume athletics.”

Newton will open Sept. 4 at home against Woodward Academy. Alcovy is scheduled to play at North Forsyth on Sept. 4. Eastside’s first game is Sept. 11 at Winder-Barrow.
