Georgia Police and Fire Games returning to Gainesville

By Lauren Hunter Multimedia Journalist

The City of Gainesville will soon welcome law enforcement officers and firefighters from around the state as it hosts the 2021 and 2022 Georgia Police and Fire Games starting in June of next year.

This event, which is comparable to an Olympics for first responders, features individual and team competitions in cycling, combat shooting, fishing, softball tournament, Toughest Police Officer, Toughest Firefighter and more. Law enforcement officers and firefighters from agencies in Georgia are encouraged to compete and find out who the best in the state is.

The City of Gainesville announced this week that it had placed the winning bid for the games and will host for two years.

The city has hosted the games once before, for the 2007 and 2008 competitions. Robyn Lynch, Director of Tourism for the City of Gainesville, said the city is glad to be hosting again.

“[It’s] a chance for our community to show first responders how much we respect and appreciate what they do,” said Lynch.

Lynch said first responders with Gainesville and Hall County are looking forward to hosting the event again, as well.

“They are really excited! It’s been over 10 years since the games have been here and they’re glad to have them back,” said Lynch. “They’re competitive in nature, as well, so they’re looking forward to taking home the win in many of the categories.”

Lynch said many of the events will be spectator-friendly and encourages the community to come out and support local first responders as they compete.

“We’ll have some hospitality events in the evening where we’ll be able to get everyone together and do some fun events throughout town that the community can be involved in,” said Lynch.

The first round of games are scheduled for June 20-26, 2021, while the second round of games will take place the week of June 19-25, 2022.

The city is looking for volunteers to help with hospitality events and setting up competitions. Anyone who is interested in volunteering can email Lynch at [email protected].
