NASCAR postpones all race events through May 3

NASCAR announced late Monday afternoon that all race events will be postponed through the first weekend of May.

“The health and safety of our fans, industry and the communities in which we race is our most important priority, so in accordance with recent CDC guidance, NASCAR is currently postponing all race events through May 3, with plans to return racing in Martinsville,” NASCAR announced in a statement.

Should the postponement not be extended, the race weekend at Martinsville Speedway on May 9 will be the first time the NASCAR Cup Series since it competed at Phoenix Raceway on March 8.

Meanwhile, the first race back for the NASCAR Xfinity Series will be on May 23 at Charlotte Motor Speedway, while the NASCAR Gander Outdoor Truck Series would return on May 15 at Charlotte Motor Speedway.

Along with the previously postponed races at Atlanta Motor Speedway and Homestead-Miami Speedway, other tracks seeing races pushed back include Texas Motor Speedway, Bristol Motor Speedway, Richmond Raceway, Talladega Superspeedway and Dover International Speedway.

“We appreciate the patience of our fans and we look forward to returning to the race track,” the statement read. “We intend to hold all 36 races this season, with future rescheduling soon to be determined as we continue to monitor this situation closely with public health officials and medical experts. What is important now transcends the world of sports and our focus is on everyone’s safety and well-being as we navigate this challenging time together.”
