Ryan Newman awake, speaking after Daytona 500 crash

Roush Fenway Racing has released an update on driver Ryan Newman, who was involved in a grinding crash at the end of Monday’s rain delayed Daytona 500.

“Ryan Newman remains under the care of doctors at Halifax Medical Center in Daytona Beach, Florida,” the update reads. “He is awake and speaking with family and doctors.

“Ryan and his family have expressed their appreciation for the concern and heartfelt messages from across the country. They are grateful for the unwavering support of the NASCAR community and beyond.”

Newman was leading coming to the checkered flag in Monday night’s event when he tangled with second place driver Ryan Blaney.

Newman’s car was turned into the outside wall, where it flipped over and was then hit in the roof by the car of Corey LaJoie.

Newman’s car slid on its roof in a shower of sparks. It came to rest at the exit of pit road, where rescue crews were quickly on the scene.

He was taken to nearby Halifax Medical Center, where he team officials later said he was in “serious condition with non-life threatening injuries.”

The Roush Fenway Racing update concludes by saying the team will continue to provide information as it becomes available.
