CLEVELAND — White County officials are making plans to move forward with repairs to roads and replacement of bridges that were damaged or destroyed by the recent rains from Hurricane Delta.
The county had applied for assistance from the Georgia Emergency Management Agency, but officials learned this week that GEMA would not be making a flood disaster declaration.
Commissioners met Thursday morning and approved a local disaster declaration that will enable the work on these roads and bridges to move forward more quickly.
“We have multiple roads and bridges that need attention as soon as possible.,” said Commission Chairman Travis Turner.
White County submitted to GEMA just more than $5 million in damage for the county.
White County Manager Jason Cobb said not having to answer to state and federal officials “realistically to repair what’s there and replace as is, it will be substantially less than that.”
According to Cobb, some of the bridge work could take a little bit longer especially Airport Road bridge. That bridge was already on the Georgia DOT list for replacement, but the project wasn’t expected to be done until 2022. Cobb said White County will be asking state officials to help move that project date up
