Elachee Nature Science Center holds educational summer camp

By Joy Holmes Multimedia Journalist

Need help keeping the kids entertained this summer? Elachee Nature Science Center is offering a 9-week seasonal day camp for kids preschool to seniors in high school.

“At Elachee, we really focus on environmental education,” Mallory Pendelton, the Education Programs Manager and Camp Director at Elachee, said. “We have a good balance on the camp activities, but also blending it with that underlying educational component,” she said.

On average, Elachee sees roughly 1,000 kids at their summer camp each year. The center teaches the kids a different theme per week, giving the kids a hands-on learning experience.

The theme for this week is Sense of Wonders for the preschoolers who are being taught using the different senses. The elementary to middle school aged kids are having Wilderness Survival Week, where they are learning the things they need to know to survive in the natural world, like building shelters and fires, Mallory said.

“Today we talked about how tendering, kindling and fuel are the big steps to what you need as supplies, as far as those little sticks building up to those bigger sticks,” Mallory said.

The kids circled around a camp fire while Mallory also taught them about the different ways to ignite a fire; and of course, no campfire would be complete without roasting marshmallows.

The camp is on their second week, but it’s not too late to enroll your kids.

“We have spots pretty much available for the rest of the summer,” Mallory said. “but we do close registration every Thursday before that camp week starts.”

It is encouraged parents call the science center to check availability because spots will fill, she said.
