A former Georgia State Senator who represented portions of Gwinnett and Fulton counties has been elected Chairman of the Georgia Republican Party.

David Shafer, who represented Senate District 48 from 2013 to 2018, was elected to the position Saturday during the party's 2019 State Convention.

This is Shafer's first re-entry into the Georgia political scene since his narrow defeat at the hands of Geoff Duncan in the 2018 election for Lt. Governor.

This year's convention was held in Savannah, and saw the attendance of 1,538 delegates from across the state.

A media release from the Georgia Republican Party also listed the other individuals who were elected to the party's Executive Board during Saturday's proceedings:

First Vice-Chairman: Carolyn Fisher

Second Vice-Chairman: Brant Frost

Secretary: Michael Welsh

Assistant Secretary: B.J. Van Gundy

Treasurer: Joseph Brannen

Assistant Treasurer: Vikki Castiglio
