Just last week, the Hall County Commission voted to move forward with a plan to improve operations at the county-run animal shelter, and this week, the county announced details of its new Community Cat program as part of the overall plan.
The county will hire a coordinator for the Community Cat program, but even while that search is underway, current leaders of Hall County Animal Services will begin an effort to identify feral cat colonies across the county.
According to a press statement, Hall County will work with the public to trap feral cats in the community. Citizens are encouraged to report any such colonies to Hall County Animal Services.
Cats that qualify for the new program will be trapped, spayed or neutered, vaccinated and then released back into their habitats.
Best Friends Animal Society, which released the findings of its assessment of Hall County Animal Services, said the program should reduce the number of cats being brought to the Hall County Animal Shelter and reduce cat euthanasia rates. Best Friends assisted with the implementation of a similar program in Cobb County, which saw its save-rate increase from 61-percent to 93-percent.
