Habersham sheriff’s K-9 captures chase suspect

CLARKESVILLE – The Habersham County Sheriff’s Office reports a man who fled from deputies Monday is in custody, thanks to the work of one of the agency’s canines.

“We apprehended him with a dog bite,” said Sheriff’s Lt. Matt Wurtz.

A male led deputies on a vehicle pursuit on Ga. 365, Duncan Bridge Road and Mud Creek Road just before 9 a.m. Monday.

“During the pursuit, the tag came back to a vehicle stolen out of Coweta County,” Wurtz said.

The man wrecked the 1998 Ford Ranger pickup truck on Mud Creek Road and fled on foot.

Despite lengthy efforts and use of tracking dogs, deputies did not locate the man but remained in the area.

An alert resident notified deputies of a man observed on foot in the Duncan Bridge Road area about 1:30 p.m. When deputies saw him, he again fled on foot before being apprehended by a sheriff’s office patrol dog.

Deputies initially believed the man might be armed, but “we didn’t find any weapons on him when we took him into custody,” Wurtz said.

Wurtz said the man, whose name has not been released yet, faces “several traffic charges and theft by receiving at the minimum.”
