Inert landfill, gas station clear Hall planning commission

The Hall County Planning Commission recommended approval of an inert landfill and a convenience store at its meeting Monday evening.

The landfill, if approved by county commissioners, would be on a more-than 12-acre tract of land on Calvary Church Road near Barber Road. The applicant, Clyde Broadway, Jr. is looking to rezone the property from Light Industrial to Heavy Industrial and build an office near the pond that would be used as the landfill.

Planning Commission Chairman Chris Braswell said he believes the landfill will not cause any problems for the surrounding area.

"Any time you hear the word 'landfill' you do look at it more closely than you normally would, so we want to make sure we do the right thing and I think we did," Braswell said after Monday's meeting.

No one spoke against the proposed landfill in the public hearing held before the planning commission's vote.

Also recommended for approval by planning commissioners at the meeting was a rezoning that would make way for a QuikTrip gas station and convenience store on the southbound side of Ga. 365 at White Sulphur Road.

The proposed store also had no public opposition at the meeting. The applicant did request a variance to allow for a higher sign, saying the sign needed to be around 35 feet high to be visible to southbound traffic approaching the intersection of White Sulphur Road. Planning commissioners agreed to include that variance in their recommendation to the county commission.

Several planning commissioners voiced support for the store, saying a gas station was needed on the southbound side of the highway in that area.

The landfill and the gas station will both go before the Hall County Commission for a final vote on October 24.
