FLORENCE, S.C. — Four players scored for the University of North Georgia women's soccer team as the Nighthawks remained unbeaten in Peach Belt Conference play with a 4-1 win over Francis Marion Sunday afternoon.
The Nighthawks wasted little time getting going as Dani Shartouny scored off a Patriot turnover deep inside the FMU defensive half. Nine minutes later, Shartouny found Renee VanHorn on a cross into the box to double the Nighthawk lead.
In the 41st minute, Brooke Fitzhugh scored her first collegiate goal on a close-range shot, assisted by Payton Bisso and Daizah Patterson. The Patriots answered in the 44th minute on a Dayle McEwen penalty kick to cut the lead down to 3-1 headed to halftime.
UNG scored one more goal late in the match as Caroline Nelson found the back of the net off an Asa Thorsen corner kick in the 81st minute to seal the 4-1 win.
NOTES
- North Georgia dominated possession in the attacking third, taking 24 shots while holding FMU to just four shots, one of which was the penalty kick. In total, 13 Nighthawks took a shot in the match.
- The Nighthawks are now 2-0 in PBC play, marking the fifth time in the past six years UNG has started league play with a 2-0 record.
- Now at 5-1 on the year, the Nighthawks are off to their best start since starting 9-0-1 in 2015.
