DAHLONEGA — After over 35 minutes of a scoreless second half, Prince Domafriyie hammered home a winner from point blank range as the University of North Georgia men's soccer team earned a 2-1 win over Anderson Saturday night in front of an over-capacity crowd at the UNG Soccer Complex.
The Nighthawks struck first as Alex Grant drew a penalty kick that Adam Farrell was able to convert and put the Nighthawks up, 1-0. It looked as if the game would remain at that score headed to halftime, but the Trojans put home a goal off a corner to tie the match with three seconds left until the break.
North Georgia pushed forward a lot more in the second half, creating multiple chances before finally hitting the game winner in the 81st minute. Evan Davis started the play by throwing the ball deep into the box. Eren Ozer was there to head the ball down to Domafriyie who fired the ball into the upper right corner of the frame to push the Nighthawks out in front.
The Trojans created a couple of good chances late, but Matt Sharman made every save down the stretch in between the posts to preserve the 2-1 win.
NOTES
- This is the first win of the season for the Nighthawks, who improve to 1-1-1 overall in 2018. UNG also takes a 5-4-1 lead in the all-time series with the Trojans with the win.
- Farrell is now a perfect 5-for-5 in his career at the penalty spot. He moves to within one of the all-time career record held by Daniel Bowlt.
- Anderson took 22 shots to North Georgia's 16, but the Nighthawks outshot the Trojans in the second half, 9-8.
