Habersham fights back yet again for second straight win

By AccessWDUN Staff

CLEVELAND — Habersham Central football could get used to this.

After a tough 2017 season that featured six razor-thin losses, the Raiders posted their second straight comeback victory of the 2018 campaign on Friday, knocking off White County 34-20 in Cleveland.

Habersham trailed 20-0 just after halftime but ripped off 34 unanswered points to seal its second straight victory.

Five different Raiders (2-1) found paydirt on Friday, as Jackson Clouatre, Tracey Lowery and Arian Curry notched rushing touchdowns and Dontarius Bailey and Tarin Westbrook also hauled in scoring passes from Raiders quarterback Tre Luttrell.

Luttrell finished with 167 yards passing, completing 10 of 27 attempts, while also rushing 10 times for 65 yards. Clouatre paced Habersham with 79 yards rushing on 16 attempts, as Habersham finished with 213 yards on the ground.

Michael Mintz led White County with 88 yards rushing and a touchdown, while Kurtis Havlen added 55 yards and a score as the Warriors (1-1) sprinted to a 14-0 first half lead.

Warriors quarterback J Ben Haynes (9 of 25, 131 yards, 2 interceptions, 1 touchdown) also connected with Cooper Turner for a 32-yard score just 1:35 into the second half for a 20-0 advantage.

But Habersham refused to panic and began to fight its way back into the game. The Warriors suffered when starting defensive back Cody VerSluis was ejected for a targeting call, and Habersham turned the tide en route to the win.

The Raiders will play host to Franklin County next week.

White County, meanwhile, will look to bounce back next week at Pickens.
