Three-car crash on I-985 injures two

By B.J. Williams

A Flowery Branch man suffered serious injuries and a Gainesville woman was hurt in a Friday evening crash on I-985 northbound at Mundy Mill Road.

Troopers from the Georgia State Patrol (GSP) Post in Gainesville were called to the scene just before 6 p.m. Friday.

Investigating troopers said a 1997 Ford Expedition being driven by 60-year-old Rufus Larkin of Flowery Branch was traveling northbound on the exit ramp to Mundy Mill (SR 53) and traveled out of the lane.

The vehicle then ran off the right side of the road and hit a guardrail, continued north and then entered the intersection, rear-ending a 2013 Kia Soul.

Troopers said the Expedition continued to travel north and hit the raised concrete median and then overturned. In the process, the Expedition struck the front of a 2016 Volkswagen GTI.

Larkin suffered serious injuries and was taken to Northeast Georgia Medical Center for treatment. Charges are pending against Larkin, according to GSP.

The driver of the Kia, 57-year-old Lynn Lauke of Gainesville, was also taken to Northeast Gorgia Medical Center for evaluation of injuries.

The driver of the Volkswagen was identified as 37-year-old Douglas Stiner of Gainesville. Stiner was not seriously injured, according to troopers.
