Sheriff: No attempted child abduction in school bus incident

By B.J. Williams

While an investigation continues, it appears there was nothing criminal about an incident that that happened as some children got off a school bus in Nicholson last week.

Jackson County Sheriff Janis Mangum said investigators were able to talk to a woman who confirmed she was at the scene on JS Williamson Court the afternoon of Tuesday, Aug. 7.

Mangum said the woman, who was driving a blue Chrysler 300, had gone to the neighborhood to talk with some children who her children had visited the day before without her permission.

"The mother of the children at that residence did observe the woman calling the children over to the vehicle, but didn’t have a conversation with the driver," Mangum said in a press statement.

The sheriff said the woman did not ask the children to get into her vehicle.

Also, Mangum said the mother of the students did not see a black male on the scene, even though one of the children told investigators there was a black male with the woman.

Mangum said the woman did nothing criminal, so there are no charges in the incident.
