GBI: Alpharetta man charged with threatening UNG professor, others

An Alpharetta man faces charges in Lumpkin County after allegedly threatening gun violence toward a University of North Georgia professor and others.

Georgia Bureau of Investigation spokeswoman Nelly Miles explained more about the incident and how the GBI came to be involved.

“It came about because the University of North Georgia Police Department requested the GBI to assist them in an investigation,” Miles told AccessWDUN. “There were some threats made of violence to one of their university professors. Those threats included threats by email and letter, and also involved a threat of gun violence against the professor, other staff, as well as students if that professor did not resign.”

The request from University of North Georgia Police Department for GBI assistance was made on Wednesday, Aug. 1.

“That investigation has resulted in the arrest of Jose Gomez of Alpharetta,” Miles said. “He was arrested at his home in Alpharetta, and at this particular point he is the Lumpkin County Jail, where he will face charges in Lumpkin County Superior Court.”

Miles identified 23-year-old Gomez as a former student of one of the university professors at UNG.

“When he began making the threats, the school system took it very seriously and working with their police department they brought the GBI along into the investigation,” Miles said. “It’s been an intense investigation for the past week that led to the arrest of Mr. Gomez."

Gomez is charged with terroristic threats and acts.

“I think the main point in this investigation is that this could have potentially been a very bad situation, but the school system acted immediately and brought the GBI into the case,” Miles told AccessWDUN. “Combined, they were able to potentially prevent something that could have been a really bad situation.”
