Football: GHSA announces deal to ensure all state finals to be held at Mercedes-Benz in 2018

By AccessWDUN

THOMSON — Georgia High School Association Executive Director Robin Hines updated the GHSA Executice Committee at the July 10 Board of Trustees meeting that all the state championship football games scheduled at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in 2018 will be held at the stadium.

This move comes on the heels of the 2017 finals having to be moved a week back due to a snow storm that blanketed most of north Georgia and forced the cancelation of all but two finals scheduled for Mercedes-Benz.

The state finals are slated to be held Friday and Saturday Dec. 7 and 8 at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. However, there is the possibility that the MLS Cup, which is scheduled for Dec. 8, could interrupt those plans. The Atlanta United, which plays its home matches at Mercedes-Benz, has been leading the MLS for most of the season and the team with the best regular season record gets to play host to the MLS Cup.

The motion was contained in the minutes of the July 10 meeting. The GHSA Board of Trustees unanimously passed a ruling saying the championship games at Mercedes-Benz woud be moved to Tuesday and Wednesday Dec. 11 and 12 if Atlanta United made the MLS Cup finals and had the best record.

Hines informed the Committe that the GHSA has reserved Tuesday and Wednesday (Dec. 11 &12) in case we are bumped out of the
preferred dates of Dec. 7-8 by the Atlanta United soccer club’s playoffs.
