Three homes destroyed by fire in Dawsonville neighborhood

By B.J. Williams

Eleven people were displaced when three homes caught fire in a Dawsonville neighborhood early Thursday morning.

Dawson County Fire Chief Danny Thompson said calls began coming in to the county 911 Center around 12:15 a.m., alerting officials that the homes were burning on Burt's Crossing Drive.

"On arrival - five minutes later - units found three homes well-involved in fire," said Thompson. "They called for additional alarms and also mutual aid from Forsyth County."

Thompson said it took about an hour to bring the fires under control.

In addition to the three homes that were destroyed by fire, three others - another on Burt's Crossing and two on Winding Creek Court - suffered heat damage, according to Thompson.

"At this time, the Red Cross is working with all of the residents, since they have been displaced," Thompson said.

The Chief said none of the residents suffered injury, and all firefighters were unharmed, as well.

As far as the cause of the fire, Thompson said it may take awhile to find out where the blaze started.

"Investigators obviously are going to go through the buildings of origin, they'll take the witness statements," said Thompson. "I know they've been collecting a lot of cell phone video and footage from residents that were in the area and kind of putting the pieces of the puzzle back together."

Officials from the State Fire Marshal's Office are assisting Dawson County with the investigation.
