GBI identifies man found dead in Chattahoochee River in Helen

The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has released more information about Friday’s death investigation in Helen.

White County 9-1-1 received a call about 10:30 a.m. Friday reporting a man who had been spotted by a tourist submerged in the Chattahoochee River near Brucken Strasse, according to GBI.

“Once responding personnel were able to retrieve the male from the water, he was identified as Gary Phillip Freeman Jr., 42, of Troy, Ala., according to GBI. He appeared to have been visiting Helen.

An autopsy is set for today, June 30, at the GBI Medical Examiner’s Office in Decatur.

The investigation is ongoing.
