The unemployment rate was 2.8 percent, down .1 percent from last month. That's the lowest unemployment rate in the state among the 14 metropolitan statistical areas, according to the State Labor Commissioner Mark Butler. The rate was 3.8 percent a year ago.

While initial claims for unemployment were up to about 57 percent for the month, those rates are down by about 10 percent for the year.

Butler said the number of employed increased in May by 812 residents. At a record 101,070 total employed residents, Gainesville is up by 4,943 for the year.

“Georgia’s employment numbers remain strong,” Butler said. “Across the state, the unemployment rate either remained steady or dropped.”

Gainesville gained 800 jobs in for the month, total jobs settling at an all-time high of 93,500. That puts Gainesville up 4,000 jobs for the year. The labor force also set record highs in May, up 726 for the month to 103,937 and increasing 4,026 for the year.
