Medical helicopter transports Cornelia child to Atlanta burn unit

CORNELIA — A child was burned after an incident at a Cornelia home late Sunday night.

At 11:30 p.m. June 10, Habersham County E-9-1-1 received a call from a Cornelia home reporting that an 11-year-old child had received burns to his face, chest and arms, according to Habersham County Emergency Services Director Chad Black.

Personnel from Habersham County Emergency Services, Cornelia Fire Department and Cornelia Police Department immediately were dispatched to the home. During the response, a medical helicopter was placed on air alert due to information provided by the 9-1-1 center.

“Initial arriving units found the child with an estimated 30 percent burns that included face, chest, abdomen and hand. Adults at the scene advised the child had a lighter and bottle of isopropyl alcohol in the bathroom when they heard what was described as a loud noise, explosion-type sound, from this area,” Black said.

Habersham County Emergency Services personnel treated the child, who was taken to a landing zone established at Cornelia Elementary School on Old Cleveland Road.

The child, whose identity is not being released, was taken by AirLife Georgia helicopter to the burn unit at Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta for treatment.

No further details have been released at this time.
