Possible police impersonator reported in Gilmer County

Gilmer Sheriff investigators are on the lookout for a law enforcement impersonator.

According to a post on the Sheriff's Office Facebook page, a teen girl claimed she was pulled over by an unmarked car with emergency police lights.

The girl said a white man with blue eyes and five o'clock shadow walked up to her car around 2 a.m. Saturday and asked if she was drunk, according to 11Alive.

When the girl said no, the man said she was not who he was looking for and drove away.

The teen had just returned from a class field trip in Atlanta and was heading home from Gilmer High School, the TV station reported. She also apparently told police she didn't recognize the vehicle was behind her because its lights were off. The incident happened on Highway 52 near the jail and animal shelter.

The Sheriff's Office said there is no record of this traffic stop. They said in the post if you are pulled over and think the officer is an impersonator, ask for the identification or badge, ask for the officer to have another person dispatched to the scene, or simply call 911.

The Sheriff's Office also encouraged drivers to put hazard lights on and pull over in a well lit place or business with a camera if you are stopped by an unmarked car.

They also asked anyone with information about the incident or the man to contact them immediately, either through the Gilmer County Sheriff Criminal Investigations Division at 706-635-4646 or the non-emergency line at 706-635-8911.
