Police ask for public's help in fatal hit and run Sunday

Gainesville Police are asking for the public's help in a hit and run case on Atlanta Highway that left a pedestrian dead.

On Sunday, around 11:45 p.m., police officers located the hit and run victim at 1750 Atlanta Highway. "Upon arrival, officer found an adult, Hispanic male who was unfortunately pronounced dead on scene," said Sgt. Kevin Holbrook. A passerby saw the victim on the side of the roadway and called police.

The suspect vehicle is believed to be a full-size Chevrolet pick-up truck or SUV, between years 1999 and 2005, according to a press release from Gainesville Police. The vehicle should have front end damage, especially to the passenger side.

Crash investigators believe the vehicle was traveling north on Atlanta Highway, towards the city, in the area of Beaulieu of America.

Investigators are also seeking anyone who may have witnessed the crash or saw the vehicle in the area between 10 p.m. and midnight. Police said any and all information is valuable to solving the crime.

"We're hoping someone out there saw something, we're hoping that someone knows something, they may have seen this vehicle, they may have seen a vehicle today with this type of damage, anything that can lead us to the identity of the suspect. We're hoping to bring some closure to the family of the deceased," said Holbrook, adding that investigators were currently working on the case.

Anyone with information is asked to call crash investigators at 770-535-5163 or 911.
