Two airlifted after boating incident on Lake Burton

CLARKESVILLE — The Georgia Department of Natural Resources has charged a Clarkesville man after a serious-injury boat crash on Lake Burton late Saturday.

Michael Kevin Phelan, 58, of Clarkesville was arrested and is charged with boating under the influence, serious injury by vessel, and a 100-foot law violation, according to DNR Public Affairs Officer Mark McKinnon.

The incident was dispatched at 11:10 p.m. Saturday, April 21, near the dam on Lake Burton.

When Georgia DNR Game Wardens responded, Rabun County emergency personnel were on scene and in the process of airlifting one male and one female to Northeast Georgia Medical Center, according to McKinnon.

“Upon arrival, the officers determined that a single vessel, with seven people aboard, struck two large trees overhanging from the lake bank,” McKinnon said. “The Game Wardens also determined that the operator, Michael Kevin Phelan, age 58, from Clarkesville, was under the influence of alcohol.”

Further details of the incident, including the names of the victims, are not available as of Sunday night.
