State: No smoke alarms in Habersham house fire that claims second victim

MT. AIRY — A second victim has died as a result of Tuesday afternoon’s house fire near Mt. Airy.

Ginger Bleckley, 41, of Mt. Airy died Friday, April 20, from injuries suffered in the fire at the home she rented on Cody Road, according to Georgia Insurance and Safety Fire Commissioner Ralph Hudgens’ office.

Bleckley was airlifted from the parking lot of the nearby Habersham Hills Cinemas to Grady Memorial Hospital in Atlanta, where she died just days later.

Roy Dale Savage Jr., 30, of Habersham County died shortly after the fire Tuesday afternoon.

Bleckley and Savage were sleeping in one room, while Gary Stratton Jr., 17, was in a different room in the back of the house, officials said.

Stratton was able to get out of the house after the fire started. He was transported by ambulance to Northeast Georgia Medical Center.

State fire officials said no smoke alarms were present in the home.

The fire at the rental home, on Cody Road between Ga. 365 and Camp Creek Road near Mt. Airy, was reported about 12:15 p.m. Tuesday.

Hudgens’ office ruled out foul play, saying the fire was accidental, and that candles and smoking materials can’t be ruled out as the cause, though candles appear more likely.
