Man killed mowing grass at Chattahoochee Golf Course in Gainesville

A man was killed Thursday morning while working at the Chattahoochee Golf Course, City Manager Bryan Lackey confirmed.

David Roger Silcox, 69, was mowing grass at the course around 10:30 a.m. when the riding mower he was operating overturned, said Lackey when reached by phone Thursday afternoon.

Silcox, who had worked continually at the golf course since July 2010 with prior off-and-on stints dating back to 2003, was apparently navigating a "tricky area" near Hole 16 when the accident happened.

"David had been there so long that the staff there tells me that he actually trained other people on how to use certain equipment, how to do certain things. He'd been there that long. He was, I guess you'd say an expert of things," said Lackey.

Crews will be investigating the accident to determine exactly what happened, and what can be done in the future to prevent it from happening again.

"Unfortunately this will serve as a reminder that even while you're cutting grass on a golf course, there (are) safety features to be mindful of and that we need to be paying the best attention possible at all times," said Lackey.

"Our thoughts and prayers go out to the Silcox family. We're just saddened. Obviously he was a long-time employee, a key part of our team."

The course is located off of Ga. 60 on the north end of Gainesville.
