Overnight commercial fire causes morning closure of Monroe Drive in Hall County

Hall County Fire services and Gainesville Fire Department crews remained on the scene of an overnight commercial fire that continued to have Monroe Drive closed between Allen Creek and Old Candler roads Monday morning.

Hall County Fire Captain Zach Brackett said the call came around 9:30 p.m. to the business called AFCO.  According to its website, AFCO is a a specialty chemical and food safety provider.

"Arriving units found the roughly 3000 square foot structure with heavy smoke showing," Brackett wrote in a media release.  "Heavy fire was encountered in the rear of the building and offensive fire attack operations took place initially."

Brackett said multiple chemical containers with fire involvement were inside the building, and crews were put into a defensive mode to prevent spread of the fire to nearby buildings. The fire was contained to the building of origin.

Hall County Public Works was putting dirt around the site.

"At this point, we're looking to contain runoff from the site and mitigate any environmental hazards that there might be," Brackett said.

The cause of the fire is unknown at this time, and no injuries have been reported.

The Georgia EPD has been notified, and the Environmental Protection Agency is responding for environmental monitoring.
