Student arrested for alleged threats against Dawson County High School

A 17-year-old Dawsonville High School student, identified as Hailey Michelle Lawson, is charged with making a violent threat against her school.

"What Ms. Lawson disclosed was that her and her boyfriend would come back at a later time, how it was put to us it, 'to shoot the school up,'" Dawson County Sheriff Jeff Johnson said.

He said a student alerted her parents to the overheard alleged threats on Wednesday.

In the wake of the deadly school shooting in Florida, Johnson said people are paying more attention to threats.

"Students especially are taking it more seriously now, and they are reporting it."

Lawson is charged with one count of terroristic threats. Johnson said it's possible her boyfriend may also face charges.

Lawson was arrested Thursday and remained in the detention center awaiting a bond hearing at the time.
