Baseball: Chestatee gets game-ending triple-play to beat Jackson County; Banks stays unbeaten, Jefferson falls

GAINESVILLE — Chestatee got a triple-play to end the game to preserve a thrilling 3-2 victory over Jackson County Friday in baseball action.

The War Eagles led 6-3 in the top of the seventh when the Panthers put runners at first and second with no one out. A hard line drive was snared by second baseman Clay Tyas, who threw it to shortstop Joe Sutton covering second base and then Sutton threw it to Robbie James at first to complete the triple-play and the wild win.

Chestatee (3-0) led 3-0  after a run in the first and two in the second before Jackson County (0-1) tied the game with three runs in the third. But the War Eagles reclaimed the lead with a run in the bottom of the third and added a pair of insurance runs in the fifth.

Caleb Carter and Phillip Lemay each had two hits and two RBI to lead the Chestatee offense. Joe Sutton added a pair of hits and Storm Yarbrough had a hit and an RBI for the War Eagles.

Sutton also picked up the win going five innings scattering four hits and giving up just two earned runs. He fanned eight.

 

BANKS COUNTY 13,
CEDAR SHOALS 2

Banks County improved to 2-0 on the young season after routing the Class 6A Jaguars.

Caden Cotton had a triple and two RBI and also got the win for the Leopards. Dylan Greenway also had a triple and two RBI for Banks County.

The Lopards will play host to Jackson County on Saturday.

 

MORGAN COUNTY 3,
JEFFERSON 0

Brandon Trefren took the loss on the mound for the Dragons (1-1) on Friday despite yielding just three hits in 5 innings of work. 

Zac Corbin, Lane Watkins, Justin Cole and Clayton Jones each produced hits for Jefferson.

Jefferson plays in a tournament at Athens Christian next week, beginning with North Oconee at 7 p.m. Thursday.
