Students from Hall, Fannin, Union and Forsyth counties are the latest service academy appointments by U.S. Representative Doug Collins.
They are Loretta Strickland, Michael Herrington, Emmi Schakat and Jack Haller.
Herrington will join the class of 2022 at the United States Naval Academy, and Strickland will attend the United States Naval Academy Preparatory School.
The senior class president at Flowery Branch High School, Herrington is the son of Mike and Vickie Herrington. He is a member of the National Honor Society and cross-country team and has received the Air Force Association Outstanding Cadet award.
Strickland is the daughter of Greg Strickland and is the first student from Fannin County High School to receive an appointment to a military school. She competes in track and cross-country events and is part of the Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps.
Schakat, daughter of William and Mary Schakat, will attend the U.S. Military Academy in the fall. A top student in her class, she hopes to be a soldier and humanitarian. Schakat has excelled in academics and athletics at Union County High School and is a member of its soccer, cross country, and basketball teams as well as BETA Club and Future Farmers of America.
Haller, son of Richard and Julie Haller, has been admitted to the Naval Academy Preparatory School in Rhode Island. He attends West Forsyth High School and follows his family’s example of military service. His mother and father are graduates of the United States Air Force Academy. He has siblings who have graduated from the Naval Academy, where his sister Cassie is currently a Midshipman. He is also Georgia’s 2017 pole vaulting state champion.
