Wrestling: Area competitors head to state Traditionals looking for one last crown

By AccessWDUN Staff

MACON — There's already been more than enough success to go around the mats of northeast Georgia this wrestling season.

Jefferson and Commerce continued their dominance, while Buford defended its title and North Hall started what it hopes a new dynasty at the state duals in January.

Those victories only served to whet the appetite, however, and you can bet that members of the Dragons, Tigers, Wolves and Trojans -- as well as wrestlers from throughout the area -- want more as they head south for the state Traditionals this weekend in Macon.

The aforementioned programs have plenty of tradition to uphold, as Jefferson will gun for its 18th straight GHSA Traditional crown and 21st overall, while Commerce eyes a fifth straight, and sixth overall. Buford, meanwhile, is the defending Class AAAAA champ, and is looking for its third overall. And North Hall is hoping for a Class AAA sweep of state crowns this season, as it takes 10 competitors to the tournament. The Dragons qualified 13 wrestlers in the Class AAAA bracket, while the Tigers (Class A) and Wolves (Class AAAAA) each take 12 to the Macon Coliseum.

And that's the tip of the iceberg, for while those programs may have their eye on an overall crown, plenty of individuals from northeast Georgia will also gun for personal glory. The meet begins on Thursday for Classes AAAAAAA-AAAA, while Classes AAA-A get going on Friday. All champions will be crowned on Saturday, beginning at 3 p.m.
