*The U.S. Army Cadet Command has selected the University of North Georgia Corps of Cadets as the 2016-2017 winner of the MacArthur Award for 1st Brigade, which encompasses the nation's six senior military colleges – UNG, Norwich University, Texas A&M University, Citadel, Virginia Military Institute, and Virginia Tech.  

*Jackson County Beautiful’s newest Adopt-a-Road participants are Martha Collier Blokzyl, The Nixon Family and Friends, and Visiting Angels of Hoschton.  

*Ilona Karneyenka, Interiors Adjunct Instructor at Lanier Technical College and an alumna of the school's Interiors Program, is featured in the February 2018 issue of Modern Luxury as one of "Atlanta's Faces of Design."

*The Jackson County Animal Shelter is currently in need of dry dog food (any brand), bleach, and laundry detergent. Items can be dropped off at the Shelter or at the Historic Courthouse.

*27 high school students from Chestatee, Flowery Branch, Johnson and West Hall High Schools qualified to compete at the State HOSA Leadership Conference.  HOSA is the future healthcare professionals’ organization for students enrolled in healthcare science courses and pathways at the high school.  Click here to read more about HOSA and see the list of qualifying students.

*The Georgia Department of Community Affairs announces Braselton is one of four communities in the state to renew the coveted PlanFirst designation. The department confers the PlanFirst award to communities with a proven track record of strong development and implementation of their comprehensive plans.

*Several students from Chestatee, East Hall, Flowery Branch, and Johnson high schools are advancing to the next level in the FBLA National Awards Program, which recognizes and rewards excellence in a broad range of business- and career-related areas and one student has already qualified for the National level.   Read more about the program and the students by clicking here.

*Winter storms and the flu don’t just mean a lot of people are missing work and school – it also means they can’t keep their American Red Cross blood and platelet donation appointments. The Red Cross is urging healthy donors of all blood types to roll up a sleeve to help maintain the blood supply for patients in need.  There are a number of opportunities in northeast Georgia this month. *As the University of North Georgia expands language and study abroad opportunities, more students are winning prestigious national scholarships to pursue their interests in locations around the world this summer.  Click here to read about the latest winners.

*North Georgia Technical College Automotive Technology student Jason Nichols, of Carnesville, was recently awarded the 2018 Phoenix Patriot Foundation’s Veterans Scholarship for the state of Georgia, totaling $1,000. Requirements for the scholarship included being a veteran and writing an essay about future plans after college.
