HIAWASSEE – Lumpkin County used a stingy defense to rally past Hayesville, NC 61-43 in the first round of the Battle of States tournament Thursday afternoon.
After falling behind 24-21 at the half, the Lady Indians held Hayesville to one point in the third and eight points in the fourth. Lumpkin outpaced the Yellow Jackets 30-9 in the second half.
Isabel Davenport and MacKenzie Pulley led the Lady Indians with 19 points each. MaKenzie Caldwell poured in 17 points.
Clara White hit for 4 points and Madisyn Echols had 2.
The Lady Indians (11-3, 2-3) will play Towns County Friday. Game time is 7 p.m.
